What is new in UCAT ANZ 2025?
For 2025, the UCAT ANZ has introduced some significant updates that all applicants should be aware of. Most notably, the Abstract Reasoning (AR) subtest has been completely removed from the exam. This decision was made based on research indicating that AR had lower predictive value for success in medical and dental training, and was considered too coachable compared to other sections. As a result, the UCAT ANZ now includes three cognitive subtests—Verbal Reasoning (VR), Decision Making (DM), and Quantitative Reasoning (QR)—alongside the Situational Judgement Test (SJT), which assesses non-cognitive skills.
Several timing changes have also been implemented. The Decision Making section has been extended to 37 minutes(from 31 minutes), and will now feature 35 questions instead of the previous 29. Quantitative Reasoning has increased slightly to 26 minutes (from 25), though it still contains 36 questions. Interestingly, even with these adjustments, the overall test duration is now 111 minutes, which is 4 minutes shorter than the previous version.
The scoring system has been revised to reflect the new structure. The three cognitive subtests (VR, DM, QR) will each be scored out of 900, for a total maximum score of 2700. The SJT will continue to be reported in Bands 1 to 4, as in previous years.
Lastly, instruction times before each subtest have been extended, giving candidates more time to understand what’s expected. Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, and Situational Judgement now provide 1.5 minutes of instructions (up from 1 minute), while Quantitative Reasoning allows 2 full minutes (up from 1 minute).
These changes aim to enhance the test’s fairness, relevance, and overall alignment with the skills needed in medical and dental careers.
