Is NEET required to sit the IMAT?

No. NEET is not required for IMAT registration or Italian university admission. Can I choose more than one Italian university?

EU students can rank multiple universities on Universitaly and participate in rounds of seat allocation as seats become available. Non-EU students apply to one university only. There is no second chance within the same cycle if your score does not clear your chosen university's cut-off. This is the most important rule to understand before deciding where to apply.

The IMAT is offered once per year. If you miss registration, you wait until 2027. Registration typically closes within 9 to 12 days of opening, and test centre seats in popular locations fill within hours. Have your Universitaly account created and payment card ready before registration opens.

Are there scholarships available?

Some Italian universities and the Italian government offer merit-based scholarships and DSU grants. Eligibility is generally assessed after admission. It is worth researching your target university's scholarship page, but do not build your financial plan around it.

Since CINECA took over from Cambridge Assessment in 2024, the exam has placed more weight on direct science knowledge in Biology and Chemistry and reduced abstract logical reasoning. What Is the UCAT?

The UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test), formerly the UKCAT, is a computer-based admissions test used by the majority of UK Medical and Dental schools. It does not test A-level content. Universities introduced it because grades alone stopped differentiating candidates. When nearly every Medicine applicant holds predicted AAAs, something else has to separate the field.

The Biggest Change for 2026: Abstract Reasoning has been removed

The UCAT exam has undergone one of its most significant structural changes in recent years, starting in 2025 and continuing into 2026, with the complete removal of the Abstract Reasoning subtest.

The total cognitive score now runs from 900 to 2700, not the old 1200 to 3600. To roughly compare, subtract 650 to 700 from any pre-2025 total.

The Four UCAT Sections Explained

There are no breaks between subtests. Each subtest is preceded by a timed instruction section of around 1.5 to 2 minutes. There is no negative marking, so always attempt every question. A flagged guess beats a blank.

How the UCAT Is Scored

Your three cognitive subtests (VR, DM, QR) are each scaled to 300–900 and added together for a total out of 2700. The SJT sits alongside this as a Band but does not affect the total.

What are Deciles?

Your raw total matters, but your decile ranking is what most universities use to compare candidates across years. Each decile rank represents 10% of candidates based on their overall test performance. The 1st decile represents a score at the 10th percentile; the 2nd decile represents a score at the 20th percentile, and so on.

Important for returning candidates: UCAT is launching a new candidate registration system. Access to existing UCAT accounts ends on 13 May 2026, and all candidates (new and returning) will need to create a new UCAT account to test in 2026.

How to Register

Step 1: Go to ucat.ac.uk and create a new Pearson VUE account from 20 May 2026. Use your legal name exactly as it appears on your passport.

Step 2: Complete your candidate profile, including nationality and preferred testing region.

Step 3: From 23 June, book your slot. Choose a Pearson VUE test centre or the online proctored option if available in your country. Book the earliest date that gives you adequate preparation time.

Step 4: Pay by debit or credit card. You receive a confirmation email immediately.

Step 5: Bring a valid passport or driver's licence on test day. Student cards are not accepted. No valid ID means no test and no refund.

Verbal Reasoning: Speed is the challenge here. You have roughly 30 seconds per question. Practise reading passages quickly and locating the specific claim being tested without re-reading the whole passage. Answer only from what the text says. If the passage does not say it, the answer is cannot tell.

Decision Making: This section rewards logical structure over intuition. Get comfortable with Venn diagrams, syllogisms, and probability questions. Many students underestimate DM until they sit a timed mock for the first time.

Quantitative Reasoning: The maths is straightforward. The challenge is pace and data extraction. Practise using the onscreen calculator efficiently because fumbling with it costs you time you cannot afford. QR has the highest national average, which means the margin between candidates here is tight.

Situational Judgement: Read the GMC's Good Medical Practice guidance. Understand what patient safety and professional behaviour look like in clinical scenarios. What Happens After You Sit

Your score appears on screen immediately after you finish. You receive a printed report before you leave the test centre.

You can only sit the UCAT exam once per year. That means if you are unhappy with your score in the 2026 cycle, you cannot resit until the 2027 testing window (for 2028 university entry).
