Can I resit the UCAT if I am unhappy with my score?

Not within the same application cycle. You sit it once per year. If your 2026 score is below target, your options are to apply strategically with that score or to reapply in a future cycle after resitting in the next year's test window. It is not a permanent one-attempt limit, just one per cycle.

Is online testing available for UAE students?

The Pearson VUE OnVUE online proctored option is available in many countries, including the UAE. Check current availability at ucat.ac.uk before booking, as approved locations are confirmed each cycle.

Does a low score mean I cannot get into medical school?

Not necessarily. Some universities weigh UCAT lightly or use it as one component of a combined score alongside academics. Strategic university selection matters significantly. Speak to an admissions adviser to identify where your profile is most competitive.

What is the SJT Band, and does it affect my total score?

The SJT scores you as Band 1 (highest) to Band 4 (lowest). It does not contribute to your 900–2700 cognitive total. However, Band 4 causes automatic rejection at Edinburgh, Keele, and several other schools regardless of your cognitive score. It is scored and used entirely independently.

Do I need to send my results to universities myself?

No. Results are automatically sent to UCAT consortium universities in November. You can also include your score on your UCAS form, but this is optional.

Can I sit the UCAT in a gap year?

Yes. Students in a gap year can sit the UCAT in 2026 for 2027 entry. Your result is valid for that application cycle only and cannot be carried forward to a future cycle.

Can I appeal my grade?

Yes, through the Enquiry Upon Results (EUR) process. Your coordinator submits the request, and the IBO re-evaluates specific components. Grades can go up or down, so discuss with your coordinator and, ideally, with an experienced tutor who knows the subject well before deciding whether to proceed.

What if I miss my university offer?

What happens if I fail CAS?

Failure to complete CAS means no diploma, regardless of your scores. If this applies to you, speak to your coordinator urgently about whether any outstanding CAS activity can still be counted.

How do I know if my results have reached my university?

Check with your IB coordinator that a transcript request was submitted to each institution before 5 July. You can also log in to university applicant portals or UCAS Track to confirm receipt.

Can I retake specific subjects rather than the whole diploma?

Yes. You can retake individual subjects in a future session and carry forward your previous subject grades. Your coordinator can advise on which route makes sense for your situation.

Do I need to speak Italian to study Medicine in Italy?

No. The programs covered by the IMAT are taught entirely in English. You will encounter Italian-speaking patients during clinical rotations in Years 4 to 6, so basic Italian is practically useful even if academically not required. Most universities offer Italian language classes for international students.

Is NEET required to sit the IMAT?

No. NEET is not required for IMAT registration or Italian university admission. However, if you are an Indian student who plans to return to India and practice medicine after graduation, the NMC requires that you held a valid NEET qualifying score at the time of your original university enrollment. You do not need a high rank, just a qualifying score.

Can I choose more than one Italian university?

EU students can rank multiple universities on Universitaly and participate in rounds of seat allocation as seats become available. Non-EU students apply to one university only. There is no second chance within the same cycle if your score does not clear your chosen university's cut-off. This is the most important rule to understand before deciding where to apply.

What happens if I miss the registration window?

The IMAT is offered once per year. If you miss registration, you wait until 2027. Registration typically closes within 9 to 12 days of opening, and test centre seats in popular locations fill within hours. Have your Universitaly account created and payment card ready before registration opens.

Are there scholarships available?

Some Italian universities and the Italian government offer merit-based scholarships and DSU grants. Eligibility is generally assessed after admission. It is worth researching your target university's scholarship page, but do not build your financial plan around it.

How is the IMAT different now from a few years ago?

Since CINECA took over from Cambridge Assessment in 2024, the exam has placed more weight on direct science knowledge in Biology and Chemistry and reduced abstract logical reasoning. Students who prepare with resources from 2023 and earlier should be aware that the question style has shifted. Use 2024 and 2025 past papers as your primary preparation material.

IELTS Listening, Speaking, Writing, and Reading all contribute to your final mark on the IELTS exam.

IELTS Exam Test Structure

The IELTS Exam has four timed modules. There are two types of IELTS tests, IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Both tests are graded in exactly the same way.

IELTS Academic is taken by all students planning to pursue higher studies in English speaking countries. Test takers will take the following parts of IELTS on the same day: Listening, Reading, and Writing.

Speaking test is held either on the same day or seven days before or after that, depending on the test centers. Listening and Speaking components are the same for both – Academic and General Training.

Listening

The IELTS Listening test consists of four sections, each with 1 recording. Each recording has ten questions. The IELTS test taker can only hear the recording once.

Speaking

The IELTS Speaking test consists of 3 parts and this test is recorded for each IELTS candidate. It is a face-to-face interview with the examiner.

Part 1: Introduction and Interview where the examiner asks the student details about his family, hobbies, interests, and the reasons for taking the IELTS Exam. This lasts for 4-5 minutes.

Part 2: Each candidate is given a task card and the test taker needs to speak on the topic in the cue card. The examiner also asks questions based on the same topic. 1 Minute to prepare and 2 minutes to present.

Part 3: Detailed Discussion with the examiner on the topic in part 2 to discuss abstract issues and ideas. This lasts for 4-5 minutes.

Reading Academic

The IELTS Academic Reading test consists of 3 texts and the topics of these passages cover general topics that range from factual to analytical. This section is to test your reading skills such as the main idea of the passage, logical reasoning skills, analyzing the theme of the passage, understanding the author’s opinion and attitude, etc. This score is used by universities for undergraduate and postgraduate programs or for people seeking professional registration.

Reading General

The IELTS General Reading test consists of 3 texts and the topics of these passages cover general topics that range from factual to analytical. The difficulty level of this section is higher than the IELTS Reading Academic module. The passages are taken from leaflets, newspaper articles, journals, instruction manuals, and books. These texts are what you are likely to come across in daily routine at work.

Writing Academic

The IELTS Academic Writing test has two tasks. Topics are general and suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate applicants and for people seeking professional registration. There are 2 tasks:

Essay Task 1: Test-takers are supposed to describe the diagram or data (graph, table, chart) in at least 150 words. You have to spend about 20 minutes on this task.

Essay Task 2: IELTS candidates are given a point of view, argument, or a problem. They need to present a solution to the problem, justify an opinion, present contrast evidence, evaluate ideas, or argument in at least 250 words. They have to spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Writing General

The IELTS General Writing test has two tasks. Topics are general and suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate applicants and for people seeking professional registration. There are 2 tasks:

Essay Task 1: Candidates will be presented with a situation and asked to reply and write a letter requesting information or explaining the situation. The letter could be personal, semi-formal, or formal in style.

Essay Task 2: Task 2: Test takers are provided with a point of view, argument, or a problem. They have to present a solution to the problem, challenge ideas, compare evidence, or display contrast opinions. You should write 250 words and spend about 40 minutes on this task. The writing style can be more personal than the style in Academic.
