In June 2026, Columbia University announced that it will require SAT or ACT scores beginning with the 2027-2028 application cycle, making it the final Ivy League institution to move away from test-optional admissions.

For the current 2026-27 cycle (applications this autumn for Fall 2027 entry): six of the eight require scores. Princeton and Columbia are still test-optional for this cycle only.

From the 2027-28 cycle onwards: There is no Ivy League school where you can apply without a standardised test score.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still apply to Columbia or Princeton without a score this autumn?

Yes. Both remain test-optional for the 2026-27 cycle only. From 2027-28, both require scores. If you are applying this autumn and do not have a score, these two are still technically available test-optional. But keep in mind that the students who do submit scores at these schools cluster in the 1480 to 1570 range, so going test-optional is increasingly a disadvantage rather than a neutral choice.

Do IB or A-level results substitute for the SAT?

Not at schools that now require testing. Yale previously accepted AP and IB scores through its test-flexible policy, but ended that in May 2026. Strong IB or A-level results strengthen your application but do not replace the SAT requirement.
